Bhubaneswar: Lessons Learned from Bihar, the newly elected Mohan Charan Majhi government in Odisha reportedly plans to ban alcohol in the state. The state will reduce alcohol use in a phased manner.

Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Minister Nityanand Gond said “the government is planning to ban liquor in the state in a phased manner so that it does not have much impact on the revenue”. He said the move would be taken after discussions with excise and various other departments.
The program will also hold accountable those involved in drug trafficking. Building a healthy society is of great importance.
Why Alcohol Ban?
A huge demand arisen by the female of middle class, lower middle class and poor people the ban in liquor will be very helpful in the family day to day life. Govt. should not think about revenue only social welfare of the mass population is also vital for the state. An alcohol ban in many other states have shown significant change in the families of mass population. This sparking news is very much “welcome developing sign” for the people of Odisha.
Alcohol consumption strongly correlates with an increase in violent behaviors and crimes, including domestic violence, assault, and homicide. Enforcing alcohol prohibition could lead to reducing these incidents, contributing to creating a safer community.
Health Benefit of Alcohol Ban
Over time, the general population will slowly decrease their alcohol consumption. This decrease will coincide with a reduction in issues such as liver damage, cardiac issues, and many other problems.
Liquor Banned in Other States
Earlier, the governments of Bihar imposed ban on alcohol from 1st April 2016. In Gujarat it was banned since 1960, Mizoram on 20 February 1997 and ban of Liquor in Nagaland since 1989. The result is very much favouring the small and medium sized families eliminating the big concern on individual’s health and social welfare.
